lack of blogging

I don't blog enough.  No seriously, a lot of really neat stuff happens and I just never get around to posting about it.  Then it feels like I get too overwhelmed and say forget it.  One of these days I will be able to keep up on a more consistent level, but until then I guess it will just be a here and there blog.
Well we hit up Comic Con again this year.  Man Denver knows how to put on a show.  It's fun and relaxing.  The guests are all very kind, and the people who attend have some of the best manners ever!!!
It's pretty hard to top last year's guests, but they always manage to do it.  Levar Burton was such a sweetie.   He was a lt shorter than I thought he would be.  But he was full of energy and hugs and was just happy to be a part of it.
Our journey to get as many pictures with the old Star Wars actors continues.  This year we got to add Jeremy Bulloch aka Boba Fett to our wall.  So other than the really big 3... I think we have almost all of them.
We also got some more of the Doctors from Doctor Who.  And to add bragging rights Peter Davidson liked my daughters doll so much she gave it to him for his granddaughter.  So now one of my handmade dolls is in the house of David Tennant *squee!!!*
We have also decided that we are going to keep getting Nerd Block and Loot Crate both.  They just have the coolest things in them and we couldn't decide which one we liked best.  So I get the Nerd Block and my DH get's the Loot Crate.  I think I get the better deal because of the tee shirts every month, but he likes the action figures so it's a win win.
Well that's all from Nerd Land today.... Hope everyone's summer is going as great as ours is.

Subscription Addiction

We have recently discovered subscription boxes. They are just about the coolest things I have ever heard of.  Back in the day you could get something like the cheese of the month club, or candy of the month, etc....

Now it is all about the mysterious.  You sign up for a box, and they send you a couple of things that are a mystery.  You are always guaranteed to get the value that you spent ( the average rice seems to run around 30-40$)  but almost all of them give you a lot more than what the box costs.

Being a proud nerd, the first box we subscribed to was Loot Crate.  It is a fantastic box with a monthly theme.  (this month it is dragons....squeee!!!!! )  I have this box geared more towards my husband, so that he can enjoy getting a surprise in the mail.

Then this past month I decided to sign up for Nerd Block.  This one is geared more for me.  And what I mean by that is the Tee shirt option is in my size.  ( or hiss size for the Loot Crate box)  That is really the only thing that can be ordered for you specifically as most of the items are toys, buttons, and key chains of some sort.

Then I saw an ad for Pop Sugar.  Which is more of a girly box.  By girly I mean makeup and scarves and sunglasses and jewelry.  While some of the stuff I am sure I will keep and or try, I got  this one mainly for re-gifting.  Because on top of now getting 3 boxes a month we also do.....

Reddit gifts secret santa swaps.  These go on all year and they are just great fun.  You pick out a theme you like and someone from around the world will send you things they think you will like.  I have a lot of fun sending out packages to people hoping that they like them.  We do 1-2 of these per month.

And then the last thing I do is a monthly geek crafting swap.  You can opt out of the months that don't interest you, but I don't do that very often.  This is more of a hand made crafting swap.  You end up getting things like buttons and yarn.  Hats and dolls.... and some snacks.  There is something not only fun, but a little more special about getting a gift that someone took the time to make you.

So around the end of every month we usually have 6 surprises coming in the mail.  It gives us all something to look forward to and man is it a lot of fun!!!  I am already doing a mental countdown until our first box of the month appears :)

What has life become?

Every morning I get up at 6am.  I drink my coffee, wake the boy up for school, and read the news.  There is always a lot going on so it makes for an interesting hour of reading before I wake the girl up at 7am.
There is always a lot of controversy going on.  Whether it's guns, gay marriage, bullying, school tragedies, wars, or missing planes..... there is never a dull day.  I always read as much as I can in that hour.  (The rest of the day I am working)  and every once in a while I will scroll down and read the comments.
The comments are fascinating to me.  I really do enjoy getting everyone's opinions on certain subjects.  And every once in a while a comment will stick with me for a long time.  This morning I read one of those types of comments.

" It is okay for people to disagree with you, and you need to learn that just because you want something doesn't mean you get it."

This made me think.   This made me think a lot.  Are we becoming a society where everyone has to accept everything no matter what?  Now I am not saying that is wrong.  What I am saying is that sometimes it is OK to not get your way.  It makes you grow as a person.  It shapes how you handle things when life doesn't go the way you expect it to.  It also helps you to teach your own families how to deal with the unfairness of life.

Life is hard.  It's supposed to be hard.  That is how we learn.  Is it fair?  no it isn't.  Would it be wonderful if you always got what you wanted?  Oh yes it would be.  But would you ever learn anything important?  Things lie compassion and empathy?  I don't think so.  Yes I could be wrong in thinking this way, but how could you have compassion for someone if you have never had an kind of personal loss to feed off of?

Now I am not saying you shouldn't fight for what you believe in.  You should.  And you should fight hard.  But at the same time realize that there are some battles that you will lose.  And you should use those battles to become stronger!!!

Guilty Pleasure Monday

Well our trip to Colorado was amazing.  We got to see a small herd of Elk coming down the mountain.  It's the first time I have ever seen an Elk up close and man, they are very large and powerful looking.

I scored a couple of sales at the yarn store.  It will make for some pretty dolls in the future.  I am finally starting to design my own instead of making what is currently popular.  I do have to say it is a lot of extra work, but also a lot of fun!!!

So anyway, back to my posting topic.  I am a self professed Nerd.  ( or dork, geek..... whatever word fits in the moment)  yet every once in a while I succumb to a non nerdy guilty pleasure.  This week it is all about TV.  My guilty TV show right now is Revenge.  I'm not quite sure why, but there is something completely captivating about that show.  I think it's because it takes all of our secret desires for revenge and plays out what could happen.  Both the good and the bad.

Yes sometimes it gets a little bit out there.  OK maybe a lot out there.  But the fact remains that it is a great show full of twists that you never see coming.  using technology and good old fashion spying has you on the edge of your seat time and time again.  And it is one of the main reasons that I pay for Hulu Plus, even though we have cable.  Sometimes you just have to re-watch it to catch every detail.

Our Lazy Sundays

   What I like about Sundays:

* Walking Dead.  Even though last week was the season finale, it is something we just started to get into so it will be a summer of watching back episodes thanks to Netflix.

* The Sunday night Walking Dead replacement... Game Of Thrones.  Now this is marketing genius.  Wait until the week after Walking Dead has it's season finale and start the other show that is full of twists, turns, and what the heck just happened...... like I said, genius!!!!

* Movies with the kids.  Since my DH and I watch GOT after the kids go to bed (for obvious reasons.  This show is not child appropriate at all )  during the early evening the kids get to pick out a movie to watch with us as a family.  There is something pretty great about piling a bunch of blankets and pillows on the floor and watching a movie as a family.

* munchies dinner night.  This is something we do to go along with movie time.  My kids also call it dip night.  We make some of our own dips and sauces and only eat things that are dip-able.  French Fries, Pizza Rolls, Veggie trays, etc.....  The kids also like this one because they can help make everything.  It's also the only night of the week that we eat not so healthy foods.  Everyone needs a cheat day :)

* ask the internet crazy questions.  Ok maybe not so crazy, but we do take some time in the morning to learn things that aren't taught in school.  You know important things like " are Jackalopes real"  or " what time is it in Australia right now"  I think I have as much fun as the kids when we do this, and we always compete to ask the craziest question of the week.

I love Sundays.  Its the day that we all slow down as a family and have fun.  There is something rather special about that to me.  I know in a couple of years they will both be gone with their friends and these Sundays will be the lamest thing ever..... so for now I am going to enjoy every moment of them!!!

Friday, April 4, 2014

So today we are off to Colorado.  No not for what you are thinking, but for yarn.  Yes I think I am one of the only people in the US who travels to the land of legality for crafting supplies.  Not that I am against anyone who travels for that other thing mad famous in Colorado, it's just not for me.

You see in July my DD get's to meet the 5th Doctor.  Why is that important to a 10 yr. old you may ask?  Well because he is the 10th Doctor's Father-In-Law and she wants me to make one of my very special Doctor Who dolls for him.  Oh and also to pass on a fan letter as well.  Now my DD hardly ever asks for anything.  Even when she wrote her Christmas list last year it had 3 things on it and then 2 paragraphs about how she just wants to have family time and play games while we watch a movie.  She really is the sweetest thing, so who can resist a special request from her.

So all of this means that we will be making a special trip to the yarn store today to pick out the prettiest and softest yarn we can find.  all so her Idol can have a doll for his daughter.  Man I love this kid, and to be honest who wouldn't want one of their own hand creations in the home of David Tenant.
In other news we have added the Nerd Block to our monthly subscription services.  We already get Loot Crate and that has been a big hit with the kids.  This month they are doing a dragon theme box, which I find exciting.  When we get it I will be posting some pictures and what we all thought of it on here.  As for the Nerd Block it is still a mystery..... that should arrive right before we go to Comic Con.  So later on this month should be filled with some terrific geeky amazingness
